Day 1 Morning — Imperial Grandeur & Sacred Monastery

Day 1 follows the Classic 1-Day itinerary with a slightly expanded pace. Start at Hangzhou's Southern Song Imperial Street and Yue Fei Temple (9:00 AM), absorbing the history of China's most romantic dynasty. Then visit Lingyin Temple and the Feilai Feng grottoes (10:30 AM–12:30 PM) — the ancient Buddhist cave carvings alone are worth the trip to Hangzhou.

Take your time here — unlike the 1-day tour, we're not rushed. The extra time allows us to explore the lesser-visited halls behind the main temple complex, where monks still chant daily and fewer tourists venture.

Day 1 Afternoon — West Lake Cruise & Tea Village at Sunset

After lunch (a relaxed meal at a local West Lake restaurant), we take a longer boat ride across West Lake — not just the brief crossing but a proper circuit that takes you past all the iconic sights: the Three Pools Mirroring the Moon, the Heart of the Lake Pavilion, and under the Broken Bridge. Your guide will point out exactly where the White Snake legend unfolds at each location.

As the afternoon cools, we head into the Longjing Tea Village for an extended tea experience. Instead of a quick tasting, we take a short hike through the terraced tea gardens while I explain the history of Chinese tea — from its discovery by Emperor Shennong in 2737 BCE to the modern-day tea trade. End the day with a proper tea ceremony in a farmer's home, tasting three grades of Longjing. Dinner recommendation: Hefang Street night market for local street food.

Day 2 Morning — Hidden Bamboo Forest & Nine Creeks Hike

Day 2 starts with a journey into nature. At 8:30 AM we drive to the bamboo groves of Yunqi ('Clouds Abode'), a quieter alternative to the tourist-packed bamboo forest at the Botanical Garden. Towering green bamboo shoots rise 20 meters into the sky, creating a natural cathedral. The light filtering through the leaves is an ethereal green — this is one of the most photographed spots in Hangzhou for good reason.

From Yunqi, we hike the Nine Creeks Eighteen Gullies trail — a 4 km scenic path that winds through bamboo groves, across stone bridges, and past small waterfalls. The trail ends at the Qiantang River, where you can see the legendary tidal bore (best at certain lunar dates). This hike takes about 2 hours at a moderate pace with plenty of photo stops.

Day 2 Lunch — Farmhouse Feast in the Countryside

For lunch, I take you to a farmhouse restaurant hidden in the mountains near the Meijiawu Tea Village. This is where local Hangzhou families go on weekends — not a tourist restaurant in sight. You'll eat farm-to-table dishes: free-range chicken soup, bamboo shoots (picked from the forest we just hiked), stir-fried greens from the garden, and freshly caught river fish.

The setting itself is part of the experience — tables under a bamboo canopy, mountain breeze, the sound of a nearby stream. This is the Hangzhou that guidebooks don't tell you about.

Day 2 Afternoon — Wuzhen or Nanxun Water Town or Option to Relax

You have a choice for the afternoon:

Option A — Wuzhen Water Town (recommended for first-time visitors): The most famous water town in China, 90 minutes from Hangzhou. Wooden boats, stone bridges, Ming Dynasty architecture, and the incredible night illumination. You'll arrive around 2 PM, explore the East Scenic Zone's traditional workshops, take a boat ride, and experience sunset along the canals.

Option B — Nanxun Ancient Town (recommended for culture lovers): Quieter than Wuzhen, Nanxun offers a unique mix of traditional Chinese and Western architecture from the 1920s. Stroll through the private gardens of former silk merchants. 60 minutes from Hangzhou.

Option C — Stay near West Lake: If you prefer a relaxed end to your trip, we can return to the city for a final West Lake walk, visit the China National Tea Museum, or explore the Huanglong Cave area.
