Why Nanxun Stands Out

Unlike Wuzhen's carefully curated perfection, Nanxun feels lived-in and real. Local residents go about their daily lives — hanging laundry by the canal, playing mahjong in ancient halls, cooking dinner in centuries-old kitchens. What makes Nanxun truly unique is its architecture: in the early 20th century, wealthy silk merchants built mansions blending traditional Chinese courtyards with European elements — Venetian windows, French tiles, Roman columns.

Top Attractions

Xiaolian Garden (Small Lotus Garden) — a stunning classical Chinese garden built by a silk merchant in 1885, with lotus ponds, rockeries, and pavilions. The Liu Family Mansion — the best example of Chinese-Western fusion architecture. Baijian Lou (Hundred-Building Wing) — a picturesque row of Ming Dynasty buildings along the canal. The Silk Museum — Nanxun was the center of China's silk trade.

The Food

Nanxun is known for its local cuisine: Thousand-Year-Old Tofu (a local specialty), river fish from the canals, and the famous Nanxun sticky rice cakes. I know the best family-run restaurants where you can taste authentic versions of these dishes.

Best Time to Visit

Nanxun is beautiful year-round, but morning visits are special — the canal-side streets are empty, mist rises off the water, and you have the town almost to yourself. Weekdays are much quieter than weekends.

Nanxun vs Wuzhen

If you have to choose: Wuzhen if you want the classic postcard experience, Nanxun if you want authenticity and fewer crowds. But they're only 30 minutes apart — many guests visit Nanxun in the morning and Wuzhen in the afternoon.

A local tip: visit Nanxun in the morning, when the mist rises off the canals and the town is still waking up. Last autumn I brought a Belgian couple here at 8 AM — we had Xiaolian Garden completely to ourselves for nearly an hour. The husband, a retired architect, spent 20 minutes photographing one window frame at the Liu Family Mansion because the fusion of Chinese woodwork and French stained glass fascinated him.
