A Local Guide's Insider Tips

After guiding hundreds of guests around West Lake, here's what actually makes a difference: go early. The morning light on the lake between 7-8 AM is pure magic, and you'll have the Su Causeway almost to yourself. Skip the overpriced lakeside restaurants — I take my guests to a family-run eatery hidden in a back alley near Hefang Street where the Dongpo Pork recipe hasn't changed in three generations. And don't underestimate the weather: West Lake in light rain or mist is arguably more beautiful than on a sunny day. The Chinese saying goes "晴西湖不如雨西湖" — "Sunny West Lake is no match for rainy West Lake."

Last spring, a guest from Malta asked me why so many Chinese couples were taking wedding photos by the lake. I explained that West Lake is the symbol of romance in Chinese culture — the legend of the White Snake, one of China's four great folktales, is set right here on the Broken Bridge. We ended up spending 20 minutes there, and she said understanding the story completely changed how she saw the lake.
