The One-Sentence Difference

Wuzhen is a polished, complete, stage-managed experience; Xitang is a smaller, rougher, still-lived-in town.

Wuzhen has been meticulously restored and professionally operated — it's clean, organized, well-signed in English, and easy to navigate. Xitang is more like a real town that happens to have kept its canals, with laundry lines, morning markets, and fewer barriers between you and daily life.

Neither is fake and neither is "better" — they're answers to two different questions.

Why Wuzhen (The "First Timer's" Choice)

If it's your first Chinese water town, Wuzhen is the one I usually recommend, and it's the one I include in my Wuzhen Water Town 1-Day Tour. The reasons are practical:

1. It's complete. Wuzhen has two scenic zones — the East (Dongzha) and West (Xizha) — and the West Zone in particular is large enough to fill a full day, with canals, stone bridges, old mansions, a distillery, and craft workshops. 2. It's the best at night. Wuzhen's evening illumination is, in my experience, the finest of any water town — the lantern-lit canals of the West Zone are the reason most of my guests stay until after dark. 3. It's the easiest to visit. Clear English signage, ticket windows, and a smooth transfer from the Hangzhou-to-Wuzhen route make it the low-friction choice.

The trade-off: Wuzhen is commercialized and managed, and it can be crowded on weekends and holidays. If you want raw, unpolished authenticity, this is not where you'll find it.

Why Xitang (The "Photographer's" Choice)

Xitang is smaller and quieter, and it has one feature no other water town can match: the covered corridor (烟雨长廊, "misty-rain corridor"). It's a kilometer-plus of continuous roofed walkway that runs along the canal — you can walk the whole town in the rain without an umbrella, and it's why Xitang is famously atmospheric in bad weather, when the crowds thin out and the stone reflects the sky.

What I tell guests who ask: Xitang is the choice when you want atmosphere over completeness. It's less polished, less English-friendly, and has fewer big-ticket sights — but it's also more likely to show you a water town the way it actually lives, with residents washing vegetables at the canal edge in the morning. Photographers and second-time visitors tend to prefer it.

The trade-off: Xitang is smaller (half a day to a full day is enough) and its night scene, while charming, doesn't have Wuzhen's scale. It's also slightly farther from Hangzhou — roughly 100 km versus Wuzhen's 80 km.
