Where to Stay — Cross the River

Most visitors book a hotel near West Lake and then spend the week fighting through crowds just to get home each night. The smarter move is to stay in Binjiang district, on the south side of the Qiantang River.

Binjiang is Hangzhou's modern residential and tech district — Alibaba's Binjiang campus, NetEase and Hikvision are all here — which means it's built for locals, not tour buses. It's genuinely calm during Golden Week. The tradeoff is distance: West Lake is a 30–40 minute metro or taxi ride away. But during Golden Week that commute is a fair price for a quiet, cheaper hotel and a place that isn't shoulder-to-shoulder when you step outside.

One thing worth knowing before you book: Binjiang's waterfront is the Qiantang River, not the Grand Canal. If you've booked "next to the canal" expecting the old canal neighborhood, that's actually up north in Gongshu district — and the Grand Canal riverside there is one of the city's quieter scenic walks, so it's worth the trip either way.

What Gets Crowded (And What to Skip)

During Golden Week, it's not just West Lake. These are the spots that gridlock:

- Lingyin Temple & Feilai Peak — packed from opening. If you want it, go at 7:30 AM or skip it. - Hefang Street — a souvenir street that becomes a human river. Honestly skippable any time of year. - Leifeng Pagoda — the 2002 reconstruction draws huge queues for a view you can get elsewhere. - Broken Bridge (断桥) — the most famous single point on the lake, and the most congested. - Songcheng — the theme park fills to capacity.

Basically, anything inside the West Lake ring is packed from mid-morning to 4pm. The trick isn't finding "secret" spots — it's knowing that the west side of the same lake is a different world.

Where Locals Actually Escape

When Hangzhou locals want West Lake without the crowds, we go here:

- 茅家埠 (Maojiabu) and 浴鹄湾 (Yuhu Bay) — the west side of the lake. Same water, a fraction of the people. The Su Causeway is the famous walk, but 杨公堤 (Yang Causeway) right next to it is nearly empty even in October. - 九溪十八涧 (Nine Creeks) — a tea-terrace and bamboo trail that ends at a stream. The single best rule I give clients: go before 8 AM. The classic sights are genuinely fine early — it's the 10 AM–4 PM window that's brutal. In October the morning light on the lake is the best of the year anyway, so an early start isn't a compromise.

Timing Notes for Golden Week

- Book trains and hotels as early as possible — HSR seats and the good hotels sell out weeks ahead for the October 1–7 window. - October 1–2 are the worst days in the city; it eases slightly from October 5 onward as the return traffic starts. - Weather is usually the best of the year — clear, dry, low-20s (°C) — which is exactly why everyone descends on the lake.

I've watched the same pattern every October for years: the visitors who wake up early and stay across the river love Hangzhou, and the ones who book a lake-view hotel and sleep in don't. The city rewards a little strategy.
